Pfft, hahaha!

I just watched the Cormoran Strike adaptation's trailer (though I still don't know if I'll watch the show).

Spoilers, if you haven't read the book! )

WHAT has happened between my last rewatch and now that changed my opinion of Gene?!?

Two weird things happened during the LoM rewatch I just had: 1. I actually kind of like Gene now! And 2. I noticed that he's actually nice to look at. And which happened first? Possibility A: Did I realize he's attractive and so I cut him some slack? Or B: Did I find his personality less ugly and that has made me find his face less ugly?

Either way, the thing that happened first had to be brought on by something. Possibility B makes more sense to me (because this is how it usually works for me), though I can think of absolutely no evidence for this in this case. I have no idea why my opinion of Gene would suddenly improve! He's still not my sort of person.
For possibility A I can think of only one potential cause (but hey, that's still more than possibility B has going for itself): that maybe Gene has become somewhat attractive to me because the character and I are a bit closer in age now. Though there's still something weird about that: my last rewatch was only a bit over a year ago.

I've just started rewatching Ashes to Ashes and I don't know if I realized that during my previous viewings, but A2A!Gene is a bit different from LoM!Gene. He's gotten classier in looks and as a police officer. Gene being more professional gives me feelings: He's learned something from Sam. ♥

Oh hey, the good thing about my generally improved opinion of Gene is that now I'm finally on board with Alex & Gene's UST.

Orphan Black 5x10 To Right The Wrongs of Many

I did take review notes, but fuck those, there's nothing interesting in there anyway. Ugh, I expected this to be a proper finale, but it was just a whole fucking Dénouement Episode. What a disappointment. I need to be forewarned about this sort of stuff!

Dammit, I have an Orphan Black episode to watch!

And it's not just any episode, it's the fucking finale! And yet my Life on Mars rewatch has priority. That's because I'm finally making progress, due to postponing the icon-making part until after the rewatch. So now it's every day an ep, unless I have something real-lifey planned (thanks to cap making, watching one episode can take up a whole day). And LoM isn't just the priority so I get the rewatch finished, it's also because now it's an obsession. I really, really love this show and it hit me again full force during 2x04.

But now it's almost over again, so I have decided to rewatch Ashes to Ashes to counter the withdrawal. I can even fit that in my day without losing any time! Because I won't be capping or writing reviews (see [community profile] lifein1973's rewatch tag for the latter) I can watch while I'm on the crosstrainer.

Anyway, I can't believe I'm putting off the Orphan Black finale! Never thought that would happen. On the other hand, I'm scared of any more characters getting killed off, so that probably helps me avoid the ep. It's planned for tomorrow, though. I can do it! I'm expecting a happy ending over all ...you know, except for the potential deaths.

I want to write more non-review entries.

But for some reason it takes too much effort. I'm in that phase again where I start writing comments and abort them, because I can't get it worded right or what I have to say feels just too fucking banal to actually post. I can't scrape together the bits and pieces of info I want in an entry, so usually I don't even bother starting to write.

In other (possibly somewhat related) news: A while ago I quit my antidepressant and the withdrawal has turned my emotions up to 11. If anything is slightly moving, I'll tear up. That part is okay. What's really annoying, though, is that I'm now very easily frustrated by the stupidest shit!

...on Flightradar24 and discovered the prettiness of the Outback. I wish they had links in all these places to explain how they came to look that way.

And if you zoom in, you'll find colorful layers.

Time Lords & Ladies and gender.

So many questions I'm still wondering about. And I'm hoping that because of the new Doctor we'll finally get some answers.

Are Time Lords & Ladies are always cisgender? Because so far we've only seen the Time Ls who've changed sex behave the way it's socially expected of that sex. They accept the associated pronouns and looks. Could that be described as genderfluid from incarnation to incarnation (though not within an incarnation)?

Missy seemed only half aware of her new sex, yet she called herself Missy and was conforming to it in others ways too. It certainly didn't seem to bother her. What's that? Does that still count as cis? Or is that in a way "gender neutral", that Time Ls will conform to whatever body they find themselves in?

Does gender dysphoria not exist for Time Ls? We've heard complaints from the General, but was that just because being male was an annoyance some way or did she actually feel properly unhappy in a male body?

Do Time L's mostly get the sex that corresponds with their gender idenity? Like if a Time Lady feels female, she'll only occasionally - if ever - regenerate into a man? So if a Time L felt comfortable with either sex, could they be expected to change sex several times?

Thirteen

When #Doctor13 started trending on Twitter, I started following the hashtag until I finally found a working livestream around 17:00. My god did the BBC take their time with the post-Wimbledon-finale stuff! 17:20 my mom called. Had I bet against her about the gender of the new Doctor, she would have won (I didn't take it, because I thought either gender was equally possible and what if they cast a trans actor?). Then 17:29 we finally got the announcement. I was still on the phone with my mom and described the clip to her.

That cloak was quite figure-hiding and then there was the equally unhelpful hood. Something about the legs, I thought, seemed to hint at a woman though, while the hand was unrevealing again.
Then we saw her clearly feminine eyes. And then her face, which was unfamiliar to me. Helpfully they provided a name. So then I had a look at Jodie Whittaker's IMDb page.

  • Born 1982? My god, she's my age! I thought she looked older, you know, more grown up. But maybe that's just because I fail to fully identify as an adult.
  • She was on Broadchurch! You know, that show with David Tennant, heh! So apparently (that was before I'd found the livestream) DT appeared in the Wimbledon stands some minutes before the clip was played. Maybe that had been more of a hint than we thought.
  • She's been on a show called "Doctors", heh.
  • A blonde? Still not ginger! Unless we haven't seen her properly in character yet.
  • So, a women. They got that item ticked off and relieved the fan pressure for maybe the span of 2 of the following incarnations, I'd estimate.
  • Shit, I hope people will like her! Otherwise we're in danger of people declaring that a female Doctor doesn't work.
  • Hehehehe... heh. "You know how I'm usually all about women and kind of people my own age?" There's a possibility that Bill could come back and while I don't like the idea of her having a thing for both Heather and the Doctor, I like the idea that the Doctor is suddenly Bill's type.

Thirteeeen!

Holy shit, I thought we'd have to wait until Christmas to finally find out! But also: Noooo, I'm not ready to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi! Until that tweet I had hope that Thirteen would look a lot like Twelve*, so we could keep PC a bit longer. But I doubt they'd do such an event only to anticlimactically reveal that the new Doctor actor is the old one.

* It should be possible, because didn't Romana consciously influence her new look? And Twelve really doesn't want to change anymore, so maybe he could regenerate into a very similar look.

Doctor Who 10x10 The Eaters of Light

short review )

*sigh* Something's not right with the latest episodes. The season started out so well, but then it got meh. I'm not sure what it is - pacing, maybe? It feels like Classic Who: things are happening, but it doesn't feel like it. The stories sound good in summary, but watching them isn't as interesting.
