Look, it's my last Sherlock review.
Haha, almost a third of this review is about the last 9 minutes.
1x03 The Great Game
Minsk, how unexpected. And here I noticed how Sherlock totally sounds like Snape. :oD
Oh Sherlock, you grammar nazi ^^. Ooh, there's a different past tense for hang and hang? Learn something every day. :oD
OMFG, firing the gun in the flat! I think the neighbors are safe - at least I trust the wall to be thick enough, but WTF, Sherlock? Isn't someone gonna complain about the noise? And then the gun will be found and there'll be trouble? But ooh, that smiley was sprayed on the wall with the yellow paint from last episode! And Sherlock's waving the gun around, shooting some more. Bad Sherlock, bad Sherlock!
"The wall had it coming." XD
It's really amazing how I can watch an episode over and over again and still discover new things (It's like a Muse song!). Look at John being annoyed at finding the kitchen table full of lab stuff, haha.
And for the first time I just noticed that you can see the head when John opens the fridge. I love how fast he shuts the door again.
A Study in Pink, heh, just like the episode title. O_O Sherlock doesn't know the Earth goes around the Sun? Oh, so he has so much control over his brain that he can decide what gets stored in it and what doesn't? I'd like to have that power. But how do you determine what's important and what's not?
I'm not sure why, but I feel the need to mention that Sherlock ruffles his hair again. And then he's sulking, aw. Do you get the impression that he failed to grow up a bit? And I still haven't talked about his face!
Sherlock walks over the coffee table again. I like that a bit.
"He should have wrapped himself up a bit more." In hindsight I find that really funny and call it foreshadowing. You know, the big jacket at the pool. And explosives will also keep you (veeery) warm, when they explode.
"Look at that, Mrs. Hudson. Quiet... calm... peaceful. Isn't it hateful?" Awww.
Hahaha, Sherlock's grin when Mrs. Hudson notices the bulletholes in the wall.
HOLY SHIT! They just got the windows cleaned from the spray paint, now this. And I don't want to think about how much those flying pieces of glass must hurt. But hey, at least that's it with the quiet, calm, peaceful now.
So, it's morning and John doesn't know about the explosion yet. That's a bit scary. What's a lilo?
"Well, maybe next time I'll let you kip at the end of my bed, you know."
I can't imagine how scary it must be to see on TV that there's been an explosions where you live.
So... Sherlock is fine. And Mycroft is there. Like every time when something happens to Sherlock, I imagine.
I like the dust you can see moving in the light that shines through the boards.
You know what I also like? Sherlock with his violin. I hope one day we'll get to see him play something nice on it.
Haha, Mycroft talking about the Korean elections. In fandom he's become pretty much omnipotent and omniscient, which amuses me. Anyway, here Mycroft voices his distaste for legwork (Sherlock seems annoyed) and shows his superior observation skills (Sherlock doesn't mind). Looks like Sherlock isn't competitive, he'd actually like everyone to be smart (even his brother), but he can't accept it when someone is smart but doesn't properly use their intelligence.
Sherlock doesn't want to take the case, so Mycroft gives it to John, heh. Aw, look at Sherlock's grin when John says Mycroft wouldn't be there if it was just an accident.
Heh, when John gets up from the coffee table, you can see some dust swirling.
"I'd be lost without my blogger."
The pink phone \o/! Hey, to avoid confusion with the original pink phone, the new one should totally be called MoriartyMobile. I love how Sherlock is halfway through his speech before "You read his blog?", haha.
"Hang on, what's gonna happen again?" - "Boom!" Yay, something to look forward to!
OMG, the soundtrack here reminds me of an old, obscure fandom. O hai, 221c! Low ceiling is low.
"Hello, sexy." the woman on the phone says and 2 days ago [Ha, you can tell when I wrote this part!] this wouldn't have made me think of Doctor Who. But now I'm thinking Jim is a Time Lord and Sherlock is his TARDIS. XD
A woman wearing a bomb (She's in a parking lot, there are people - isn't someone going to notice before the 12 hours are over?), and some evil guy makes her say stuff. Ooh, that reminds me of Alias, when the poor woman with the bomb had to sing "pop goes the weasel". Ah, good times.
Ahaha, Sherlock is so busy at the microscope that he won't get the phone out of the jacket that he's wearing right now!
I'm really curious about the German dub. Wonder how they'll translate the gay/hey thing.
I will forever enjoy John's facepalm when Jim gets all clumsy. Seriously, makes me laugh every time.
I'm wondering if Jim really did get an IT job there for this or if he just pretends to work there. I'd prefer the former. Also, IT, hehe, how fitting! It's a very mathy job.
Oh god, poor Molly. Why does she even like Sherlock when there's always awkwardness when those two meet?
I thought she only brought Jim in an attempt to make Sherlock jealous, but she seems really upset, so I guess that - at least from her POV - Jim actually is her boyfriend. To be honest, I'd like him to be her boyfriend from my POV too, because I ship it like whoa! I don't even know why. Anyway, if Molly had tried to make Sherlock see that he totally wants her, she would have been happy about his deduction, no?
What still puzzles me: Why did Jim go via Molly? Okay, the opportunity presented itself when she mentioned Sherlock on her blog. But can we really count the blogs as canon? I wish we could, but there are discrepancies with canon.
OMG, Sherlock's first case!
Oh, look, John in a suit. Doesn't look as nice as Sherlock's or Mycroft's, but I'm always for more suits.
Ha, Sherlock was right about the dentist.
"enough explosives to take down a house" O_O
The next victim stands on a traffic island, wires showing from under his jacket and there's a red pointer on him. You're telling me that no one would notice?
Ah, there are Sherlock's acting skills again. He can even cry on cue.
"People don't like telling you things. They love to contradict you."
Heh, the Janus Cars logo, I see what you did there. And no, it's not what they talk about in the commentary (that's something I wouldn't have noticed, if it hadn't been pointed out). It's that the J and the C remind me of Coupling.
Okay, since we have Sherlock looking cute here when he looks into dude's wallet, I'll pause there and take the time to talk about Sherlock's face. Sooo... when I watched this show with my mom, she guessed he's about 45, while I guessed about 25. I find it hilarious that our guesses are 2 full decades apart, but we were off by almost the same number of years (with only 2 years off my sister's guess was the closest). Later I read John's blog and laughed at the "he looks about 12" bit. But why is it that I think Sherlock looks younger than he is? I've come to the conclusion that it's maybe something (no idea what) in the eyes and definitly the corners of his mouth. You know what? And when he's not looking adorable, he's still nice to look at. Very interesting face... a bit like a piece of art. I could stare for hours. I also like his profile. And his hair. And... yeah, okay, I'll stop.
"our friendly bomber" ♥
Haha, I imagine Jim constantly F5ing Sherlock's website, because the pink phone rings right after Sherlock updates.
Grinning Sherlock, awwwww.
"Has it occurred to you-" - "Probably." Ahahaha. "No, has it occurred to you that the bomber's playing a game with you? [...], it's all meant for you." Oh my god, Sherlock's smile accompanying his "Yes, I know." ♥! I'm starting to wonder who's enjoying this game more, Sherlock or I? When John asks if it's Moriarty, it looks to me like Sherlock is trying not to be all "OMG, (I BET) IT TOTALLY IS!" and happy flaily about it.
"Lucky for you, Mrs. Hudson and I watch far too much telly." Oh, I wish I could have seen that.
Lestrade asks why the bomber is doing that. Does that mean John is smarter than Lestrade? "Bad samaritan." XD
I think I haven't mentioned the editing yet, so. I love the editing! There are some really cool cuts. And match cuts. I love match cuts.
Haha, the cat really seems to like John. Bald cats look weird. Bald cat also isn't as much fun as it is in German - Glatzekatze. See? It rhymes.
Aw, John wasn't right about the cat's paws. But it really was a nice idea!
I like that the old woman started to describe Moriarty's voice. Even if it wasn't helpful in the end. Boom and the split screen is gone. Oh, I love it!
Now, soft, how did she mean that? As in not loud or caring tone or not croaky? Number 3, we know from the end of the episode, is a given, but I really want it to also be #2. Number 1 wouldn't be bad either, but the thought of it being option #2 really tickles me.
"The explosion, which ripped through several, killing 12 people-" Well, shit, that's impressive. To kill that one woman, another 11 people had to die.
Sound editing appreciation time! I can hear traffic in the background :oD. Ooh and that one thing must be a bus.
"There are lives at stake, Sherlock! Actual human lives. Just so I know, do you care about that at all?" - "Will caring about them save them?" - "Nope." - "Then I'll continue not to make that mistake." I'm feeling torn, I understand both sides. Although I wouldn't want to be the victim that has to wait longer to be rescued because Sherlock is trying to get one step ahead of the bad guy. Honestly, this is a moment where I'm afraid for their friendship.
"I've disappointed you." - "No shit, Sherlock! That's good, that's a good deduction, yeah." - "Don't make people into heroes, John. Heroes don't exist, and if they did, I wouldn't be one of them." Well, yeah, heroes don't exist, but, Sherlock, people also don't have archenemies!
"You see, you just don't observe!"
"Meretricious." - "And a happy new year."
OMG, look at the text message John gets from Mycroft! The medium shot changes to a full shot and with that the text on the wall got smaller, hee.
That hat doesn't look good on Sherlock.
"The art of disguise is knowing how to hide in plain sight." I can't wait for someone to hide from Sherlock in plain sight next season!
I like that John is investigating the case Sherlock didn't want to do. Not good, though, when they wander off alone. Bad things happen when you do that.
Yes, it is beautiful, but you wouldn't be able too see that many stars. Reminds me of Ashes to Ashes, which is a bit of a scary thought.
Sherlock brought the gun. "Don't mention it." Heh.
The Golem attacks Sherlock, once more he can't breathe, yay! See, it totally is the universe retaliating for the "breathing is boring" comment. Look at the pretty colors, trippy!
Holy shit, that countdown with the kid! Sherlock seems to take his time looking up the supernova info (HA! Astronomy is important!). Okay, it took him only a couple of seconds. But in a situation where every second counts! What if the cell reception had cut out? Or the internet had been just a bit slow?
"And did those whispers have a name?" Moriarty, woman, say it! The suspense! Why is it so great to hear a word, even when you know what it will be?
John continues to investigate the Andrew West case (which, btw, I thought was good the first time I watched the episode, because I was still more or less convinced that Mycroft=Moriarty, and that Mycroft wanted Sherlock to investigate the case because it plays a part in the game). OMG, I think I was on a train that goes across that bridge! Interestingly I find this more exciting than seeing Trafalgar Square or other places I've been.
I have to agree with train dude, jumping in front of trains, not good for the drivers (also not for passengers who have to be somewhere on time). Find a different way to kill yourself.
"How long have you been following me?" - "Since the start. You don't think I'd give up on a case like this just to spite my brother, do you?" Well, I'm glad, but... I don't know. I totally would have thought he would, just to spite Mycroft.
Heh, I love how Sherlock and John are sitting there in their coats, because the windows are still just boarded up. "I knew it was dangerous." - "Hm?" - "Getting you into crap telly." You know what will forever remain a mystery to me? Why so many people watch crap TV when there's so much good stuff out there! Now I'm wondering what kind of shows Sherlock would enjoy. Probably not CSI, I bet they make the clues look all wrong, haha.
"Threatened me with a knighthood... again." Ooh, imagine: Sir Sherlock. ♥
Aw, look at John type. Heehee. I wouldn't have noticed that, by the way, if my mom hadn't pointed it out.
I love how obvious it seems in retrospect that Sherlock really wants John out of the way. Maybe that's why he's watching crappy shows, making loud comments. That's why he says he'll get milk.
Ha, the Bruce Partington plans do play a part in the game. I love that Sherlock just writes "the Pool" and it's clear what pool he means.
Ah, *flail* arrived at the pool scene. I love the pool scene, the pool scene iscool what made me fall in love with this show. This scene's Holy Shit Quotient is amazing! Best 9 minutes ever.
Look at Sherlock not wearing his coat! I wonder where exactly he left it. For some reason I imagine it's on the reception desk (or whatever that thing is called).
John in a suspiciously warm jacket in a pool. OH GOD, YES! I had waited for this. Felt like I had waited ages. Probably because Sherlock episodes are so long (also probably because the first time I watched the episode I paused it, because the Battlestar Galactica finale was on TV). John wearing a bomb, *excitement*! I think I love this more than I should. "Bet you never saw this coming." Well if he didn't, I'm better than Sherlock, ooh! See, that's what happens when you don't watch good TV!
"Nice touch, this. The pool where little Carl died. I stopped him." Did he really (and did he do it for himself or was is for someone else)? I mean, that would mean there has been a connection between Jim and Sherlock for 20 years now! Which would just be... cool.
"Is that a British Army Browning L9A1 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?" - "Both." ♥
So! This is Moriarty (looking much better in a suit, btw)... and he's not Mycroft. Why did I think it would be Mycroft? I only figured that out when I rewatched 1x01 the first time. Ah, right, Mycroft had said he's Sherlock's archenemy.
But what is this about playing gay (Faux Yay! \o/) and all that stuff? I had no idea what Moriarty was talking about. "Oh, did I really make such a fleeting impression?" Yes, Jim, yes, you did. Took me a bit to remember Jim from IT, Molly's 'boyfriend'. Pro tip: Don't pause an episode, then watch something else (especially if it's something that will leave an impression... like a series finale), and then just continue watching the paused episode. I thought I wouldn't need to rewatch what I had seen so far, but evidently I should have.
I like that there's (really by coincidence, according to the commentary) a sign saying "deep end" behind Jim.
"Now you're in my way." - "Thank you." - "Didn't mean it as a compliment." - "Yes, you did." - "Yeah, okay, I did." ♥ He's a bit Master, don't you think? I love how he totally used clients of his organisation as pawns in his game. Aw, Jim says "my dear"... I can help thinking of Foo Fighters's DOA: it's a shame we have to die, my dear/no one's getting out of here alive. And how awesomely creepy is it that Jim alternates so fast between cute and serious?! And the sincerity of "I have loved this." ♥!
"That's what people DO!"
Well, okay, the part of the Bruce Partington plans was a small one. I love the face with which Jim is throwing the memory stick into the pool.
John goes into hero mode and grabs Jim. "Good! Very good!" says Jim and I concur.
But! Another twist! There's another sniper. This is fun! But I have to wonder where they're hiding. I mean, we've seen the place in the establishing shot and people on the balconies, or whatever those things are called, should be visible.
"I'll burn you. I'll burn the heart out of you." Uh, anyone else worried about Sherlock's newly acquired best friend? No? Yeah, okay, no need to, really. They probably won't deviate from ACD canon in that respect. But still. And oh my god, Jimmy, baby, you have the best facial expressions. He's the very definition of ":-/" here ♥. "I have been reliably informed that I don't have one." - "But we both know that's not quite true." Why so adorable, Jimmy? Oh, I love your face!
"What if I was to shoot you now? Right now?" - "Then you could cherish the look of surprise on my face." And Jim is another emoticon: :O.
So, Jim is finally gone, everyone survived the confrontation, phew!
Look at Sherlock: again (like when Sarah and John were Black Lotus hostages) Sherlock helps the hostage (in this case John out of the bomb jacket), instead of following the bad guy. But why not throw the bomb in the pool?? Dammit, it would have been somewhat less dangerous in there!
There are those moments when I imagine what happens next or what I would do/say and sometimes that's what actually happens, I like that. Here it is John, not being able to stand anymore. If it was me, I would have probably added some flailing and "HOLY SHIT!"s, though. Oh, I like this. I shouldn't like this, but god, I love to see characters suffer. And this is the exact moment where I fell in love.
Sherlock is clearly suffering, too. Look at him waving the gun around even worse than he did at the beginning of the episode! A gun is not something to scratch your head with! Aw, words... he doesn't even... sentences! ♥
Ooh, but it's not over! The (way too shaky) laserpointers are back (They shouldn't shake so much, should they, if they're good?). Moriarty is back (he's soooo changeable ♥)! Haha, I love this so much. Wait, what, how many snipers are that now? Four, five, six? Stop shaking, dammit, I can't even count!
And can I just say that there really needs to be a soundtrack released?
John nods, Sherlock turns around and points the gun at the bomb (He's so on his way to become a good man here!), Moriarty looks uncomfortable (But where's the look of surprise? :o( ) and the snipers are taking their time. Why is that? See, this is why the bad guys always lose. They just let the hero do his/her thing until it's too late. Don't let him/her talk, don't let him/her do, just shoot. Hey, and have you seen the noobish stray dot that's dangerously close to Jim? Ooooon the other hand, in the very last shot of his face, Jim was smiling. Does he have faith in his snipers? Does he know something we don't? Is the bomb, as some people seem to think, a fake?
And then the screen goes black. NOOOOO! OH GOD, WHAT AN ENDING! They better deliver in the next episode! I don't want this resolved lamely. So... what could happen? I want that bomb to explode. And the absence of Sherlock's coat seems to point for that, because the coat is precious and it could be like in Supernatural: when Dean wears the leather jacket, he's safe. But how to save yourself from the explosion? The water should be somewhat safe, I think. But how to get in fast enough? You'd have to be well on your way into the water before shooting the bomb.
Ooh, I love this. Have I told you how much I love this?
1x03 The Great Game

I love the pool scene, the pool scene is
Look at Sherlock not wearing his coat!
