Ein Fall von Synchronisation
Just watched the German dubbed Sherlock 1x01.

Let's start with the episode title. Ein Fall von Pink (a case [not suitcase but that other meaning, you know ... dammit, how can I describe it?] of pink) they named it, which is an okay translation, but the title's reference to A Study in Scarlet (which is Eine Studie in Scharlachrot in German, Wikipedia tells me) gets lost.

So. As a general rule it's to be expected that you don't like the dub when you're used to watching a show in the original language. Because it's really hard not to compare the voices and judge the translation. Of course sometimes dubbing really can improve a show. When an actor is bad, good dubbing can save the character. Not that any saving was necessary in the case of this show.

Okay, let's get specific.
I recognized several voices, but couldn't place any except Mycroft's (O hai, Giles!). But that's okay, I can look at an earlier entry where I mention the voice actors's characters I know.

And now my thoughts in chronological order:

Sounds like they translated John's nightmare.

I like Ella's voice.
John - I know that voice. It's weird. Not the voice, but that I know it, but can't tell who it is. And it's just not John!

I like the voice of the first victim's affair. How she laughed when she said "get a cab", that was cute.

Donovan - sounds too professional, too easy to respect. There's nothing in the way she's spoken that makes up for the lack of accent.
Lestrade - okay. Should be easy to get used to.
Daily Mail reporter - like.
On-screen text isn't as pretty as the original. :o/

Ololol, Mike's voice. Doesn't fit at all.
"Ich dachte, du würdest irgendwo als Zielscheibe rumlaufen - was ist passiert?" - "Ich wurde getroffen." Ooh, but I love the translation of this dialog!

Sherlock - wrong! Dammit, what's with this kindergarten cast?! We have too many youthful voices, not enough people sounding like grownups.
Molly - okay, but not really right.

Mrs. Hudson - voice okay, but she's not speaking right. Lacks cute.
I wonder when Sherlock and John will stop saying "sie" (the formal "you") to each other. And since I'm talking about this pesky "sie": it can be really confusing in some dialogs, because it can mean "you", "she" or "they". Same with "ihr" - it's the plural "you", formal "your", "her" and "their". Did I forget anything?
Heh, they kept the emphasis on "my husband was just the same".

"Oh god, yes." - said too lamely. :o/
Mrs. Hudson is using the formal you for Sherlock. :o(

Anderson - didn't even notice he's got a different voice. It's perfect! Not just the voice itself, but the way he speaks! :oD

Jennifer Wilson's wedding ring is "stumpf"? Hm, not the word I'd use in this context. I'd use "matt".
"Nein, sie war stinksauer und wollte uns das auf deutsch mitteilen." Like the way it was said, heh.

Mycroft - Giles, aw yeah!
Anthea - yes.
"Ich mache mir Sorgen um ihn. Ständig." What a glorious way to say "ständig"! ♥

Sherlock sounds like (voice) actors sound when they're trying and failing to sound villainous. And he's attempting the deep voice, but they should have gotten someone who doesn't have to try.
"obviously" - "offenkundig", meh.
Trying to remember from where I know John's voice. An anime maybe?

Angelo - perfect!

John's laugh - well done, hee.

Cabbie - good. Making up for the lack of accent with the way he's talking.

"Oh, ich verstehe, sie sind also auch ein richtiges Genie." Mmm, well done with the sarcasm here.
"aber es tut immer noch so weh" the way he makes it sound feels soo good. XD

"Mami" - well, what else would it be, but still: :oD
