Last night was Dresden's Long Night of Sciences, where the university and colleges show and tell you interesting stuff about all kinds of things. My best friend and I went.
First we listened to a talk about terrestrial laser scanning. We were shown the 3D image of an actual murder case! In low resolution, though, because there was an appeal. Then the room with us was scanned. I found it fascinating to read "Denim" on a guy's shirt. Must have been elevated then, because obviously the scanner sees distances (and assigns different shades of gray to them) but not color. My blue Moriarty shirt was displayed as white.
After that my best friend and I took the shuttle bus to the IT building. While we were there I checked the notice boards, but my #believeinSherlock poster was gone.
Café ASCII is memetastic :oD! But I have no idea why they spelled coffee with an i.
We went to the room where the next thing we wanted to see was supposed to happen, but found out it had been postponed by one hour. Nothing else that we wanted to see was near or soon enough. So instead we went outside and got a bratwurst, then set off to the nearest canteen (there was heavy rain - I'm so glad I was wearing my rubber boots!) where we had a dessert. Om nom nom.
When we were back in the IT building, the room for our postponed thing was too full and disgustingly hot, so we went to the other thing that I wanted to see and that happened at the same time: How movies turned digital. Heh, the Star Wars trilogies have done 3 of the firsts! I can only remember 2 of them: the first entirely computer-generated scene was in Episode 4 or 5 and Ep. 2 was the first movie to be entirely filmed with digital cameras.
After that there was only one thing happening that my best friend wanted to see. We tried to get there by shuttle bus, but then noticed we went the wrong direction, d'oh! So we walked back and tried to find the building. There was only a construction site! But before giving up we went up the driveway between the 2 unfinished buildings and saw the building behind it. Phew, we found it in time!
We looked at a cleanroom from the outside and learned a bit about it. Wow, only 100 dirt particles per cubic foot in there! We also looked at 3 of the place's labs: Looked at wafers, light-emitting diodes and learned a bit about the crystal-growing. I didn't know that 'grow' was used like that in German too. Usually (in different context) we 'let grow' (or 'cultivate'), but here it was just 'grow'. The coolest thing was the electron microscope. Holy magnification, Batman!
