1. What I forgot to mention in my last Hobbit post is that the grammar is also weird. For example, in German "someone" is conjugatable, but the word is never conjugated in the book and it weirds me out. Also, apparently this 2003 edition is based on the 1956 edition's translation and the 2003 translator only looked through it the old translation and OK'ed it. Really, the person could have updated a bit. Come on, what's the point of long-windedly calling it "roasted slices of bread", when you can use "toast"?

2. Something weird happened after that last post: I didn't mind the old grammar and words anymore. I suspect it's just funny timing instead of my venting causing it. I guess it's what happened with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone too: at first it's okay, but then the story gets better, I feel comfortable with the story, so the negative things don't annoy me as much. That would explain why I have no bad memories of The Hobbit.

3. Fucking spiders! Of the giantic sort! Lots of them! I had forgotten about the spiders. I got through the part in the book okay, but I'm a bit worried about the movie. Goddammit, what is it with fantasy and huge spiders? Won't somebody please think of the arachnophobes?!
