Mindfuckery

This is a picture of the Grand Canyon.

It looked like mountains to me, although I was pretty sure the Grand Canyon is a deep instead of a high thing. So I looked it up and confirmed. But then why did this picture look like mountains to me? I tried telling my brain to see it as a gorge, I tried telling it that North is probably on the top in this picture and the sun shining from the South on a northern-hemisphere thing makes totally sense and should let my brain interpret the formation as a gorge, I tried inverting the colors, I tried turning it upside down - nothing worked.

Until I turned it that way.

For some reason (Tell me why, if you know!) I need to see it from that angle to see a gorge.
