The new year has started and people are doing resolutions. A friend asked for ours, so I put together a comment, which I think I should share here:

I don't do new-year's resolutions, but I'll list some things I want to do. I've been more miserable lately, so these are the things that I think would help:

  • Stop obsessing about building a complete, faithful-to-the-books Hogwarts in Minecraft. It would take a fuckload of effort to make it work and I don't have the time or energy, so of course the project would make me miserable. Maybe only build important parts of the castle, without trying to connect them all.

  • Scale down the iconmaking again :o/, so I have time for productivity and TV shows.

  • Catch up on TV shows. It's important because they make me happy.

  • Resume the salad-eating. I think this latest phase of exhaustion & extreme unproductivity might have started when I gave up on my veggies. I stopped because it was such an unsatisfactory meal, at least when I make the salads myself. Even if taking up vegetables again doesn't help against the exhaustion, at least I'll eat healthier again.

  • Post more on LJ & Dw and try to be less shy about commenting.

The layout for [community profile] icon_library is making indirect progress. I started putting together a CSS with all the classes and ids of the Negatives base style, but then noticed that there's no shared div around the maincontent and sidebar (or primary and secondary, as they're called in Dreamwidth CSS terms). The layout I want to make would need one though, so I checked out other base styles. I'm now picking apart Five AM.

Wow, Dreamwidth is pretty luxurious! So many divs! Possibly even to the point of redundancy. The outermost div has an inner div, primary has an inner div, almost everthing has an inner div. And so many elements have classes, even several classes for one element! You can style the fuck out of this! For example the security type and the poster's name are listed in the entry div's classes. Which means that you could make a private entry greyish or a bit transparent to make it easier to discern. No more "Shit, is this post public?!" before spotting the little private-post icon. Or you could give certain users' posts a distinguishable style.

My desire to recreate Flexible Squares (especially the combination of icon and poster name that's nowhere to be found in Dreamwidth layouts) in Dw S2 has been reignited. Unfortunately the guides about how to build S2 layouts seem to be still incomplete, but it probably doesn't matter anyway, since I've never understood anything by just reading about it. I'd need an S2 for Dummies or find someone who explains the language to me or even builds the layout for me. *sigh*

Some sites take 10 minutes to load! Good thing it's only my secondary browser. I googled the problem and tried 2 of the suggestions, but neither helped. After that I was too frustrated to keep looking for a solution.

That problem got really annoying when I posted a bunch of X-Files icons yesterday. In my main browser, Firefox, I'm logged into to my fueschgast LJ and Dreamwidth accounts, because I use them more often than the fuesch accounts. But because Chrome has become unusable, I had to log out of my LJ & DW accounts in Firefox and log into the fuesch accounts. After posting to fuesch I logged out and back into fueschgast, only to discover that I had a typo in the posts. Logged out of fueschgast and into fuesch, corrected the typo. Logged out of fuesch and into fueschgast, posted links to the icon post to several comms. Checked the psds of my icons to see if I needed too add something to my resource credits. Yes... fuck. That whole logging out and in was so bothersome that I haven't credited the new resource site yet.

But for some reason it takes too much effort. I'm in that phase again where I start writing comments and abort them, because I can't get it worded right or what I have to say feels just too fucking banal to actually post. I can't scrape together the bits and pieces of info I want in an entry, so usually I don't even bother starting to write.

In other (possibly somewhat related) news: A while ago I quit my antidepressant and the withdrawal has turned my emotions up to 11. If anything is slightly moving, I'll tear up. That part is okay. What's really annoying, though, is that I'm now very easily frustrated by the stupidest shit!

Yesterday I upgraded my Dreamwidth account, buying it only for the icon space. It was super easy, no going to another website required - yay!

What wasn't easy was what came next, because I didn't think things through. I imported my icons from LJ to Dw, there wasn't enough icon space, so I deleted some on LJ that I haven't used in a while. So there it had started getting messy, because I didn't want to look through which icons were new on my Dw and which ones are the original 15. And I've been wanting to reorganize my icons for a while, so I did that then by renaming their keywords on LJ and also manually on Dw (because I didn't know if an import with new keywords would mess with the entries that use the old keywords). Did another import to get the remaining icons, but Dw didn't seem to have noticed that I had made changes to my LJ icons. And then my Dw icons had both the old and the new keywords. So then I checked every single icon and did correction where they were necessary. Haha, what fun, I know how to waste my time!

Anyway, I finally have all my icons on Dw. \o/

  • Because numbers with number sign in front of them are now automatically turned into hashtags and added also as a tag to your post, I now have to use the numeric character reference # instead of just typing #. Thanks a lot, LJ!

  • I had forgotten how much not having icons for everything can take the fun out of commenting. So I can't wait to get a paid account on Dw! I'm aiming for this month - let's see what my bank account says.

  • I've seen the position of the crosspost change from in front of the mood to behind it and back again several times today! At first I thought it was the poster changing their layout, but then I realized that what someone does with their layout isn't visible on my f'list! Why are you fucking with me, Dreamwidth?!

Argh, I'm so annoyed with [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho. It's moderated (which I know, because my icon post didn't get through yet), which is fucking killing what used to be a great community. Well, the problem isn't really that it's moderated, it's more that no posts are getting approved anymore.

But in good news: Some years (at least that's how long I think it's been) after joining [livejournal.com profile] dwicons, I can finally post there! I had some old posts stuck in the moderation queue and then I couldn't even submit to the queue anymore, but it's cleared now. I think this comm has actually done away with the moderation queue now. \o/

I changed my profile layouts on Dreamwidth (because Dw did weird things to my layout table) and without me doing anything to make them line up, the first images in each column end at the same height (although they're different heights), making the text in both columns start at the same height. It's weird, but I actually appreciate that very much. I just wonder how it does that.

...but then I noticed that the reason why I noticed so quickly is because I see them again. I have custom ones in my CSS. Interestingly my custom community userheads still show up.

Now I'll have to look at what exactly is causing it and change the overrides in all the layouts and userhead codes I posted. Ugh, stop giving me stuff to do LJ!

I'm finally working on updating layouts that I have posted and noticed that apparently you can't remove the nav strip anymore. Nor can it be changed to its old design. Is that true or am I just not finding the place where I can change these settings?
