On the love of fandoms and the evilness of cliffhangers using the example of Sherlock
The love for my fandoms is always interesting to watch (but sometimes depressing, when you know how it will/can go). From the initial crush to something less obsessive, more stable - and sometimes - to falling out of love.
Sherlock (you know, that show with only 3 episodes so far) I still have a massive crush on. I swear the duration of this phase is out of proportion, considering there's been no new material.

And now I'm not even sure I want new material! It's all the fault of the cliffhanger. It was so good that I'm afraid its solution won't live up to my expectations. And that's the fault of time. The first time I saw the cliffhanger I wanted more, I needed to know what happened then right the fuck now! But a bit of waiting and you learn to appreciate the cliffhanger. It gives you the time to think about the possibilities. That's also exactly what's bad about it, because then you start prefering some of the ideas and they turn into expectations. And, honestly, if that bomb doesn't explode, there will have to be some other epic shit to make up for it!
*sigh* Sometimes the solutions of cliffhangers destroy them forever. You know, it was an awesome moment when you didn't know what would happen then. But as soon as you know the moment isn't the same anymore. I like the cliffhangers that stay awesome despite your knowledge of how it will be resolved. I swear they exist, although I can't think of a single example right now.

So it's been said earlier that season 2 would have Irene Adler, Hound and Reichenbach. Now Mark Gatiss said a bit more and fans are freaking out juuuust a bit.
The part about the character development? Yay!
But "twisted love story" and people get understandably panicky. I mean, I think what he means there is the case, not Irene/Sherlock, but you can't blame people for worrying. And since I'm a panicky person by nature, I'm worried myself too, but only a bit. Because, despite what Mofftiss said in the DVD commentary, but what if they are sooo changeable?
And then there's Steve Thompson writing The Final Problem. We want that episode to be awesome, but Steve Thompson is the one who wrote The Blind Banker, which, everyone seems to agree, is the weakest episode.

So there isn't actual new material yet, but at least new info. Finally something to relieve my withdrawal symptoms! A crush is much more fun without that way.

Definitely agree and ironically just watched this TED talk with JJ Abrams from a few years ago, not specifically about the cliffhanger, but about the mystery and everyone making moments their own when something isn't shown on screen (http://www.ted.com/talks/j_j_abrams_mystery_box.html). I haven't gotten into Sherlock (I tried watching it and it wasn't my thing), but I like the weekly ones or in-episode ones, but the season, and sometimes even weekly cliffhangers gave me time to think and come up with 'better' things, which is the same for spoilers (for me)- I always am SO disappointed with how things turn out or can predict what will happen rather than enjoying it 'in the moment.'

Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Thanks for the link! Really interesting. And he's so awesome to watch. Hee, JJ loves boxes! Is that the reason for the box company in Lost? XD

Oh, you've watched at least on episode of Sherlock then? When I first watched it I didn't think I'd keep watching, because of a pet peeve of mine: I can't stand when characters just "deduce" something and magically are right when there were other possibilities for the clues and it wasn't explained why ruled out. Naturally that's a big part of this show. But everything else was so awesome, that I got over my dislike of this thing. But I only fell in love with the show during the last minutes of the last episode.

Ah, Alias was nice for cliffhangers. I have a rewatch on my to do list. I think I remembered a cliffhanger, that kept being awesome. When Syd was missing for 2 years. For me it was like "Wait, what? Really?" and the next season opener was like "REALLY!". After the confirmation the element of mindfuckery was gone, but I think why I still find it awesome is, that it hasn't lost its meaning. The 2 years had actually passed and provided the story for what? half the season? So I guess if it starts something and isn't just the question "How do they get out of that situation?" (classic Doctor Who had really lame versions of those) then a cliffhanger can stay awesome.

Yeah, spoilers! I love all the speculation, people get so amazingly creative! I've just read some guesses about Doctor Who season 6 that are so grweat that I really want them to be true. And maybe because I have faith in Moffat I believe people guessed correctly (happened last season too) and I won't be disappointed.
But dammit, at least for the other shows I should stay away from spoilers.

My god, I can talk sometimes!

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Lol, sorta- I got really bored and stopped watching and went to bed (it was on TV), but maybe that's why I didn't fall in love- didn't watch it to the end of that 1st ep.

I know, right? It's definitely part of why I loved Alias and why I didn't like the change to season3, especially since it changed from "reality" to not. And I think at that point I felt kinda cheated and like you said, like it was a big let-down after they/you asked such a big question.

Awesome!! I haven't had a chance to watch since Tennant left, so I have a lot to catch up on, but dunno when that'll actually happen. But that is absolutely fantastic news!!

Haha I haven't been watching many shows, sooo hard to get spoiled. Lol!

Ha ha no worries, I LOVE having these discussions with you!! Totally missed you/this!!!

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Not to be annoying or anything, but could I talk you into trying Sherlock again? I'm ridiculously desperate for someone with that I can talk about that show. I'd try friending memes, but somehow that never works. I fail with people, I can't just strike up a conversation (let alone a friendship) with strangers. There are only a handful of people on my friendslist that I actually care about. :o/

When you say change to season 3, do you mean when Lauren turned out to be a bad guy? Or when Syd discovered the truth about her missing years (That was in the middle of the season, right?) I can only vaguely remember that season. Really need to do a rewatch.

Took me a bit to get used to a new Doctor (even though Ten did go downhill towards the end), but once I did, all was good. Eleven is pretty great, so are Amy and Rory, and the Moff brings his Moffatness into the stories. Everyone loves the Moffatness.

That reminds me that I have shows back from the Christmas break and I haven't watched them! Which is only possible because I'm in no immediate danger of encountering spoilers. Although I'm sure by saying that I just tempted fate.

I love those this discussions too and that I have you to have them with. :oD

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Lol, maybe? I can re-try the 1st ep? Probably won't be till next weekend, but I can try to fit it in! :)

Yeah, I don't feel comfortable posting some of those details on the internet either.

A mix- they change up the feel of it a lot and I remember the 1st time through I missed her 'normal' life to balance her spy life and yeah the missing years and I think we've had this discussion about this, but Lauren was originally supposed to be the passenger till fan outrage won and they killed her off. I think mainly the missing years, cause I was like ummm... okay a bit too out of the realm of reality for me. I think the 'normal' life grounded the show for me and without that, it was really weird.

Cool! I dunnno, I liked his eps, but they def weren't my favs, but yeah, I'll have to catch up sooooon!!!

HA HA HA that is always the case.

YAY!! *SUPAHUGATTACK*

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Yes, please try! :oD

Yes, OMG, I loved the normal life vs. spy life thing and then it was gone Do:. What, Lauren was supposed to be the passenger? Did I know that? I'm not sure if I would have liked it or not, because, my god, did I she annoy me. I did start liking her, but that was in the episode when she was revealed to be evil iirc.

Nooo, I'm running out of things to say! I don't want this conversation to end.

OMG, hugs, I love hugs! *HUGS*

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
I'll let you know when I have! :)

Ha ha I think we'd discussed it at some point. But yeah, I didn't get to liking her till just before they revealed she was evil. She was I think in really early drafts the Passenger, but I think it would have been really interesting to see that play out. But, then, I also love Nadia and Neiss? ♥ SO CUTE!!! Especially comparing them to Syd/Vaughn in season4!! OH MAN!!! I MISS MY DVDS!!!!!!!!!!

Ha ha we can keep it going!! I haven't talked about Alias in FOREVA!! It may be repeating previous convos, but I think it's safe to say neither of us remembers exactly what was said so long ago.

YAY HUGS!! *HUG HUGGITY HUUUUUG*

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
Already eagerly waiting. :oD

We have? That's something that annoys me when i talk with my friends/family, we always seem to run out of new things to discuss and then talk about things we've talked about already. Do:
Yeah, so speaking of talking about things over and over again: I'm still not over the fact that they cast Nadia geographically. Oh god, the glass table, now I remembered the glass table ;__;. Neiss was adorable, I wish it could have lasted.

Yes, let's continue this conversation until we hit the comment limit, haha. And true about previous convos.

*HUG*

Re: Ooh! Ooooh! Oooooh!
:)

Yeah, but I also think that's part of conversations, they may be the same/similar topics, but it's never the same convo and it always tends to go different places. :)

I LOOOOVED that they did!! OH MAN!!! :( POOR NADIA!!!! And yeah, I wish it could've lasted too.

HA HA HAYES!!! I dunno where it maxes out, but we can tryyyy!!! :p
fueschgast[personal profile] fueschgast on April 18th, 2011 04:28 pm (UTC)
Fucking math.
I'm afraid to let this part of our conversation die in case you're forgetful. So here's your reminder: Sherlock!
(Tell me when it gets annoying!)

:O What did you love? The casting thing or the evil glass table?
When will you get back to your DVDs? Maybe we could have a sort of simultaneous rewatch?
And (thanks to this video, which has parts that remind me of Alias) I just remembered how great the soundtrack was.

Ha, as if we could ever get that far! I think a post can have 10,000 comments! Oh god, I really have developed a sort of math phobia. I wanted to write the percentage that we've already done, but I can't figure it out, although it should be really easy since we're dealing with the numbers 10 and 10,000 here. But I can't hold on to a thought, they're just slipping through my fingers like... something slippery *facepalm*. But I suspect that we've done 0.1%.
[identity profile] alias_chick.livejournal.com on April 30th, 2011 11:50 am (UTC)
Re: Fucking math.
OH YEAH!!! GOOD REMINDER!!! I will watch it tomorrow!

I had meant the casting. The glass thing was sad. Poor Nadia.

Oh maaan! I won't be getting back to my DVDs for a while, but do you know a good streaming/download site for Alias? If we do about an episode I week, I should have enough bandwith. Sadly, couldn't see the vid, but I imagine it was awesome! :)

HA HA HA I'm not even gonna try. But GO US!!! :P
fueschgast: Muse - SpiderDom[personal profile] fueschgast on May 1st, 2011 06:12 pm (UTC)
Replying to this comment, because the comments were getting too narrow.

Sooo... it's tomorrow now - have you watched Sherlock yet?

Ah, the casting, okay. I think I remember someone liking what happened to Nadia. And I think I remember who that was. Aw, now I'm getting all nostalic. We used to meet up to watch our favorite shows together and discuss them, but then she moved and later she left LJ. *sigh* One of the few people I know from the internet who I got to meet in real life.

I don't know any streaming sites, but I could have a download site. Need to look if they have the episodes in English too. Okay then, one Alias episode a week. Yay, it's gonna be fun!

Ah, damn BBC. Damn everyone with their copyrights. These things need to be global. Happens all the time that someone links to a YouTube video and I can't watch it in my region. Or it's been taken down completely, yeah. *sigh*
[identity profile] alias_chick.livejournal.com on May 14th, 2011 11:31 am (UTC)
JUST watched Sherlock!! Ha ha I needed the reminder for sure!! It was better this time round. Still not my fav, but maybe I'll watch a couple more before I decide.. though the site I went on only had 3? Is that all of them or are there more?

Yeah, I had that with my friends too and even when we moved cities for uni, I'd call her in the breaks or she'd call me. Lol. Goood times.

I haven't had a chance to download it all yet, but if you don't mind waiting a couple weeks I'll have more time to download/watch stuff!!

I KNOW!! SO ANNOYING!!!! WHY does it matter that I live inCanada/Australia right now??? GRARGH!!!!!!
fueschgast: Sherlock[personal profile] fueschgast on May 14th, 2011 12:29 pm (UTC)
Yes, watch more before you decide! There are only 3 episodes! What a sursprise that was when I found out after watching the third episode. Oh, those Brits with their brevity. But at least that ensures quality. There will be a second season (which starts shooting on Monday *flail* MUST RESIST SPOILERS!) and that will also consist of just 3 episodes.
I'll post my 1x01 review soon. First I need to finish my 1x03 review - I'm OCD like that.

Oh, I don't mind waiting. Gives me something to look forward to. Hey, if it's a two-parter, can we make it 2 episodes per week? Which makes me think about cliffhangers. Obviously we can't watch every episode together with the cliffhanger episode it follows, ha! I miss those little cliffhangers a bit.
(Anonymous) on May 14th, 2011 12:57 pm (UTC)
Oh maaan! Ha ha ha most of it is such good quality! I love it, but it is annoying to wait so long in between! Seriously? OMG! They know how to make the fans wait!

Cool! And if you have MSN or Skype we can plan it for the weekend and discuss as we watch/go along? I'm trying to find a streaming site because the downloading goes so slow and occasionally my internet dies and I have to start all over again. :(

But, YES!!! CLIFFHANGERS!! JJ's speciality! But they were quality cliffhangers (for the most part)! Not just like stupid ones where the plot got insane.
fueschgast: Alias - Dude I knew it![personal profile] fueschgast on May 17th, 2011 12:59 am (UTC)
Oh god, I remember when I found out that it would be a little over a year until the new Sherlock episodes.

But it could be worse. I used to watch my shows on TV and sometimes they just can't be bothered. Pro 7 (they just like to kick everything out of the program if they don't like the ratings) showed season one of Alias and I really liked it. But it took them 2 years I think to finally provide us with S2, meanwhile I had forgotten about the show. I still don't know if Pro 7 will ever continue Doctor Who. Good thing it doesn't matter to me anymore.

Oh, I thought we'd make one thread here for every episode, but I like you're idea much more! Although synchronizing could be a bit complicated. I tend to pause all the time, so I can put my thoughts into words. You know, find the words that I'm looking for, put my thoughts into order, make understandable sentences out of them.
I have Yahoo messenger and Skype. Is Skype good for chatting? Because talking is not an option, I fail at that.
fueschgast: Alias - Jack[personal profile] fueschgast on August 10th, 2011 11:34 am (UTC)
Ooh, look what I found! It's our neverending conversation. Not sure if this was the only one, though.
I chronically forget the resources I have at my disposal. I checked the mails I saved before I killed Windows because of the virus. When I saved them I put numbers in the file names, because obviously you can't save things when they have exactly the same name. They were named by the mail's subject, and LJ's subject for these notifications is always "Reply to your comment..." if there's no title in the comment. I clicked a random mail (one named "Re Fucking math.") and found our neverending conversation. The number after this mail's subject is 47. XD

I reread all that we wrote here and there are some things that make me laugh, because things changed. Like my whining about the long wait for Sherlock season 2. We'll have to wait even longer now! >_<

This is your Sherlock reminder (You know you only need to say "STFU about Sherlock already!" if you want me to stop. XD). I'm refraining from using certain Sherlock icons in my LJ, because they're spoilery for 1x03. Put me out of my misery, watch 1x02 & 03 so I can use those icons, please!

Okay, so Alias rewatch... the comment above has some info. What else? One episode a week (if it's a two-parter then both eps), yes? If we'll do the live commentary thing, we'll need day and time. I have lots of time, we could do the rewatch any day of the week, except Sundays when I go over to my mom. Time: I get up at about 10am and go to bed 2am, although I'm trying to move that forward a bit. Our timezones are 9 hours or so apart.
fueschgast: Sherlock[personal profile] fueschgast on August 10th, 2011 12:00 pm (UTC)
Sorry, I'm incapable of shutting up about Sherlock.
PS: Since you've seen Sherlock 1x01, maybe you could write what you thought about it here? But beware of the comments, I think there are spoilers for 1x02 & 03 in there.

Re: Sorry, I'm incapable of shutting up about Sherlock.
LOL! I kinda forgot? I wasn't super impressed, but then you said you got pulled in near the end of the 3rd episode, so maybe I'll watch the last 2 in the next few days/on the weekend and I comment on them after that?

HA HA HA Well, if we can sync up for an Alias re-watch, I can certainly finish Sherlock too and I can type in my comments 'live.'

OR we can do that before the Alias re-watch.

Okay, so I think your morning, my evening is best. I can't do tuesdays and wednesdays and weekends usually something or the other comes up, but maybe mondays, just cause I doubt anything would really come up. I could probably do most thursdays, but not this one. Also my skype ID is shrubbery8

I'm too tired to think right now. When it's my morning and your evening then it's the same day of the week for us, right? And when you say weekends, does that include Fridays?

Soooo... next Monday on Skype, Sherlock 1x01?

We still on for Sherlock? I think I'm 8 hours ahead (at least from zurich), so I was thinking 7 or 8 (my time) to start and that would be 11 or 12 your time. Does that work? Preference?
