So this soundtrack is by David Arnold and Michael Price - as always in cases of multiple credits for the same thing, I wonder who did what.
1. Opening Titles
Ah, it's nice to have an mp3 of that! :oD
2. The Game is On
It's weird how these different bits are together in one track. Makes it harder to talk about them. I can't just say "I love The Game is On", because I don't love the whole thing, I just love parts of it and other parts I don't care about that much.
The first part of it is a bit silly, it's like the Sherlock version of Supernatural's Brothers Guitar Theme, which gets used for various shenanigans. While I do like something about it, I don't like it as itself. I don't know, it's kind of like milk to me: it's good with cocoa powder or coffee or oatflakes, but on its own it's just not good enough.
The rest of the track I like much more. I wish I could describe better, but there's something careful about the second part. Part 3 is sort of steathly and then transitions into part 4 (Or is it still part 3? Hard to tell.), which sounds dangerous. Mmm... I love music that sounds dangerous.
3. War
I don't think I've heard the beginning of War before. I guess it was drowned out by the sound of guns. This piece also consists of several parts, everything after the first part sounds typically Sherlock. I can't even tell that clearly where a part ends and another begins. There's the second part that sounds like some sort of old piano (the strings are more distinct), then there's Sherlock's deduction-speech music♥, followed by more of the silly music. That reminds me of Doctor Who: In season 5's soundtrack there's this motif (Does that thing even have its own name?) that comes back all the time! In a way that annoyed me, but on the other hand I like it, because that's my favorite bit.
4. Pink Thanks to that piano (if it is one) the music sounds kind of old school, which is a nice connection to the original stories. And I like how this starts out dangerous, but then turns into the silly music. I still find it so fascinating how some changes to something can change the thing's character. There's a calm, sort of sneaky, version of the silly music. Then there's John's sad music again, which just makes me long for a John-shaped teddy bear to hold. Then this turns into the sunrise music. Ha, it's so cool how you can hear something and remember where you've heard it. I don't know if it was played somewhere else (I mean, it's part of Pink - so maybe), but I only remember it for the scene of the sunrise at the Thames in The Great Game.
5. Security Cameras
Ah, the introduction of Mycroft. And the start of John's bad habit of just getting into any black car that happens to stop next to him. Seriously, you'd think he'd be aware of the fact that this makes kidnapping him just so much easier. Other people have black cars, too! ...Um, yeah, not much about the music, but I just needed to get this out.
6. Pursuit
This is what you get when you combine the silly music with running. Running, running, running, all across the universe London. It's a bit circus-y. Also a bit of danger mixed in. Funny mix.
7. Which Bottle?
I like the slow danger of this and then Sherlock's deduction music and John's sad music of 'can't find Sherlock' and all the rest. Some music really is so very much part of the scene that you can see the whole thing in your mind just by listening to the soundtrack. :oD
8. Targets
Mmm... love those strings of danger. There's a sort of urgency about them. Don't like the ending, though. It's too chaotic for my taste.
9. Library Books
I don't have real favorites yet, but I'd say this is one of the candidates.
10. Number Systems
The first part is from the fight with the sword guy from the beginning of The Blind Banker, isn't it? I wonder how these bits get thrown together with other bits of music. The second part is one of the reasons why I wanted the soundtrack released. Always loved the music of the scene where Sherlock and John are looking for more of the yellow car! spray paint.
11. Light-fingered
The first part is so traveling music! Especially for when you're in a taxi XD. And then there's the music of Sherlock in Soo Lin's apartment and I can envision Sherlock getting choked. Which reminds me that season 2 lacked that *sadface*. Well, I guess the universe decided it got even for the "breathing is boring" comment now.
12. Elegy
I like the sad part of it (not the part that sounds like John's sad music - I mean, I like that too, but I'm talking about the new bit here). And only now do I realize that this reminds me a bit of Grissom's Overture (only the beginning from the point I linked - but you should listen to the whole thing, it's good!).
13. Crates of Books
This is good background music for productivity, heh. I like how the music goes "tick tock", hehe.
14. Sandbag
Mmm, I like that one, nicely dangerous - although it's a bit chaotic. Also, is that an electric guitar I hear? Feels a bit weird how it suddenly turns kind of cozy. But at least it gets louder, more energetic at the end.
15. On The Move
I think this will become a favorite of mine. And I think that there's a sound in there that's the same as in the BBC logo with the fireworks-like explosions of circles.
16. Back to Work
I like the peacefulness of this track's first part. But I seem to have problems with this episode's (I'm assuming we've arrived at The Great Game now) music: it sounds familar, but I can't tell where I've heard it.
17. Woman on the Slab
I don't have much to say about this, just that I like it.
18. A Man Who Can
Ooh, this from where they go to 221C. Easy to recognize for me, because - since the first time I heard it - it made me think of the soundtrack of my short-lived and unknown favorite show Three. I like the whole track.
19. Final Act
Don't like the noisy bit in the first part. Ah yes, and here's our beloved abrupt ending, hahaha.
