The Casual Vacancy
Turns out the book is better when I feel better. It was also better as soon as I knew what it's all about.
My god, so many Dursley-ish characters! But there are some characters that are okay so far (I say "so far", because there we a few that I expected to be okay, but it turned out they weren't). And one somewhere in between: I now feel sympathy for Krystal - despite the stealing (from people she likes - WTF?!), neverending swearing and the shouting. But at least she's trying.

True, they're real and that's something I love about Jo's writing, but some of them like something good about them. Personally I'd need to see what other characters like about a character, but Jo probably thought it's not necessary for the story.

Kay's goodness overrides her stupidy about Gavin for me. The bit of good I've seen about Gavin can't override his idiocy. Jesus Christ, he even makes himself suffer by not breaking up with Kay.

Oh god, by now I'm really invested in the story. I'm hoping for things! That Terri manages to stay clean, Sukhvinder and Krystal become friends, Kay realizes that Gavin doesn't want her and moves back to London with Gaia, and that Simon drops dead. I'd also find it acceptable if he'd attacked his family again and was killed in self-defense.

I'm 1 or 2 chapters past the rape now, btw. Dammit, Jo, the shit you put your characters through! And wasn't even very detailed, but too much detail for me.

I've finished the book and now I wonder how I haven't seen that ending coming. I was actually hoping for a happy ending *sigh*. Well, some things were good in the end, but not enough!

Oh god, I saw it coming when Krystal left Robbie near the river. All the time I was dreading it, but then the story moves to Howard and his heart attack (I'm a bit disappointed that Shirley didn't get show show what a unpleasant person she can be, I was looking forward to her murdering her husband just for admiration) and forgot to worry about Robbie. But then BAM! Shit happens and Sukhvinder is being awesome. Gah, Jo made me cry.

All because the clinic was going to close. Because of that Terri used again, Obbo stayed over, Krystal didn't want to leave Robbie in the house with him and because of the rape she was obsessed with baby-making and didn't pay attention to her brother for some minutes. God, this really went downhill in the end. I wonder about Terri's future.

At least some good things came out of it. Sukhvinder now gets respect, Colin and Fats get along, the marriage of Miles and Samantha is good again and Sam had some surprising character development. Oh god, with Sam and Colin on the council maybe the clinic will not have to move out of Bellchapel. But it's too late for the Weedons. Argh.

Btw, I kinda liked Patricia (not her car, though). A bigger role for her would have been nice. Can't blame a lesbian for not being around much, though, with parents like that.

I'm really wondering how this can be made into a TV show. I mean, can they show the sex? That teenager are having?
