Is there anything special about this time of year?  
Because recently my shows seem to be taking a bit of a break. What's that about?

Do you mean it's winter hiatus time already? Meh, I'm not really watching anything that's currently airing. I'm catching up on older shows. Tv schedules, and especially American ones, annoy me a lot.

No, it's not winter hiatus. It was just 1-2 weeks off at the end of October/beginning of November and just the American show. Well, at least Doctor Who, which is my only British show at the moment, didn't do it.
