Star Wars Episode 8
Yesterday my mom, my Jedi dress and I went to the movie theater and watched The Last Jedi. I was too tired yesterday to write my review, but here it finally is:

When the music started, I nearly cried. I rewatched The Force Awakens the day before and cried a lot, so I expected I'd feel that emotional during TLJ too. But no, that was pretty much it.

Meh, they started with a battle. Personally I prefer plot, not just for the beginning but overall. And I feel the plot was a bit thin in this one, despite the length if the movie. They could have shortened the battles.

Ooh, is that a wearable bacta tank that Finn was in?

I have to say it feels weird to have a Star Wars film that is set right after the previous one!

The humor in this movie was weird. :o/

We watched it in German - the feels when Luke finally spoke and it was the original voice actor! :oD

We finally get to see Snoke for real. I have such non-feelings for that guy. I mean, I don't even properly hate him! It's weird. Digging the gold outfit though, it's a nice change.

Finally there are tragic losses for the Resistance (not that I wanted them to have losses, they're my side). Sure, they've had losses before, but they weren't shown in a way that felt real. So I like that the battles feel more realistic, but on the other hand that makes it feel less like Star Wars. Which is a problem I also had with Rogue One.

Speaking of Resistance losses: I was baffled when they appeared to have just killed Leia. Yeah, I expect them to kill off originals, but not that early in the movie (and I hoped it wouldn't happen in every movie). So would we only get to see her as a Force ghost for the rest of the film? And was that the in-story reason why Leia wouldn't be in the next one? ... But she wasn't dead yet \o/! She saved herself with the Force! Yesss, I always wanted her to use the Force more. But then I was worried that she would remain comatose.

So many women in the Resistance! And more than before (but not quite as many as on the good side) women in the First Order! Female representation, yay!

At least Rose is grieving! Seriously, we don't see characters in this series grieving enough for all the family, friends and even whole planets they've lost!

I was so intrigued by the connection between Rey & Kylo. I thought they'd be related. But it also felt like the things you can do with the Force had been expanded too far. To the rescue/disappointment came the relevation that this connection was the work of Snoke. It was good, because at least these 2 (albeit talented) noobs didn't manage that spectacular living Force-ghost thing on their own. But it was disappointing, because the connection wasn't due to relatedness after all.

Oh, there are original island residents! Good to know that Luke wasn't all alone all this time. Hey, we still don't know how long "all this time" was. I want to know!

And speaking of island dwellers: from the trailer I thought that Chewie had adopted animals to cope with the loss of Han. But apparently the porgs just got onto the ship by themselves.

You guys! Was that blue milk? It looked kind of greenish, but I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be the blue milk! And can I just say how surprised I was to see boobs?! Yeah, they're animal boobs, but still! They were in a pretty human shape and you know how prude they are in the US (ugh, that reminds me of that "joke" where Rey asked Kylo to put something on), so I was amazed. Especially after having seen a female chimp in The Penguins of Madagascar who had a completely furry chest, while the male chimps weren't hairy around the nipples.

Soooo, the Knights of Ren are the Jedi apprentices that Kylo took with him when he burned down Luke's temple, yes?

Yoda!!! And he's old school! Not just character-wise, but also medium-wise. At least it looked to me like he was a puppet.

Huh, Snoke is already dead. Didn't expect that to happen in part 2 of this trilogy. But I certainly don't mind, as I felt so whatever about him. Yay, I knew Ben could do it! Aw, look at me calling him Ben. It was so beautiful to see him and Rey work together. So I'm pretty sad he couldn't be convinced to come to the light side. He probably couldn't have stayed there anyway, because he clearly has issues and they're not just gonna go away. And this is what I love about him, he's a believable character (unlike Anakin). So I guess he'll be the big bad of Episode 9, which makes me really sad, because by now I quite like him. You guys, I actually like a Star Wars baddie! I don't get why there are so many fans who like the bad guys, but with this character it makes sense.

Sooo... was that the truth about Rey's parents? It felt so anticlimactic and disappointing that I don't want it to be true. I want her to be Luke's daughter or something. Maybe Kylo lied to her or he was given a wrong vision by Snoke. Am I being delusional?

Rose saves Finn \o/! I was so worried they'd actually kill him off! And then I thought she was killed off! I was so relieved to find out she was only injured. And yay for realism! Because usually, when you watch something, a character not being awake anymore means they died, as if no one ever gets injured and merely loses consciousness.

Luke and Leia finally reunite! But I did wonder where he came from and if he's just doing the living Force-ghost thing. Is there a name for that? Apparition? Also: Did I imagine it or were his hair & beard darker?

Not an exact quote, because I watched in German: After all weapons fired on Luke, Hux asks Kylo "You think you got him?" and one guy in the theater laughed, which made more people laugh, heh. Kylo didn't get Luke though and by now for some reason I thought Luke was actually there.

There were a lot of animals in this movie. I liked that they made up more creatures. When the Resistance remainders were trapped in the old base and someone (Poe, right?) noticed a difference, I liked that the crystal foxes got to have a point. Though it seems a bit stupid to have a fortified base that has a not-that-secret back door.

And then it turned out that Luke was after all a living Force ghost. Ha! As I expected, that was quite an exhausting feat and I was worried. So yeah, Luke then fucking joins the Force (the 2 suns were a nice touch, though). Like, dude, you can't just become one with the Force - I need you for my emotional wellbeing, okay?! You're the last of the original trio! Gah, one dead original per movie, huh?! Except that Leia is already gone because Carrie Fisher died. So now we only have Chewie and our 2 droids left for Ep 9, but none of those are of the main 3 original characters. I'm hoping we'll see Luke again, this time as an actual Force ghost. Otherwise it would feel like something is missing.

And wasn't there a proper ending for Leia promised? That it would make sense that she wouldn't appear in the next movie? I didn't see anything obvious. I mean, if I had to make up a reason, I'd go with her just being too emotionally exhausted because both Han and Luke are dead now. She'd have to be really emotionally detroyed for her to give up fighting with the Resistance. But this series has never been that good at showing the emotional impact of things, so I doubt that's the route they'll go. Or if they do, it'll feel weird that they're doing it now.

Rey and Poe finally meet \o/! *happy sigh* I love our new trio.

The ending felt weird. But as it got towards the finish, I was worried we'd get a cliffhanger - so I'm at least glad that it wasn't one.

I got through the whole movie without crying. I knew Carrie Fisher would get an "in memory of", but I had been so distracted by the story that I had forgotten that this moment was coming. So then it came like BAM, right in the feels! I had to fight back tears.

In conclusion: There was a lot of cool visual stuff (like Holdo lightspeeding that ship in half) and action and some nice things in the story, so I liked the movie, but not as much as The Force Awakens. And I'm glad JJ Abrams will be back (also partionally because of the humor).

My guess is that in the next movie Leia will be running the resistance from behind the scenes and is only mentioned but not seen, with maybe them using some left-over footage to have her appear at the end. Or perhaps she'll die off-screen and we'll only see a force ghost of her at some point.

And like you, I was shocked when it seemed like Leia had been killed so early in the film (and then disappointed when it looked like she would be left in a coma), but so happy when she didn't die. I had been avoiding spoilers so I had no idea how they'd handle Carrie Fisher's death in the story, but I've since read that they didn't change any of Leia's scenes. Everything that happened to her would have also happened if Carrie Fisher was still alive.

Running the Resistance from behind the scenes sounds good to me. But I don't think we'll get leftover Carrie Fisher scenes - I read they didn't cut any of her bits. Although I don't know how TPTB feel about lying.
