Have caught up on Doctor Who
I finally resumed my Doctor Who watching yesterday, but didn't have enough to say to type up proper reviews. The good thing about that is that I managed to watch the rest of the season in one go.

11x06 Demons of the Punjab
Good ep, was nice to be shown a different part of the world. I like the turn that the assassin species had taken. I just wish the TARDIS fam would have had a harder time letting Prem die.

11x07 Kerblam!
Started out well, but then got weird. "Some of my best friends are robots" Ugh, why did she have to say that cringy line? That Well-Intentioned Extremist twist and how it was handled was totally out of left field. Charlie did have a point, I wish that would have been properly acknowledged - which is absolutely possible without condoning his methods. And what's oh-so-saintly about the System?! It tried to stop Charlie by murdering the girl he has a crush on. Yeah, that totally wasn't a cruel and sexist thing. And who the fuck runs Kerblam anyway?!

11x08 was okay, but I have nothing to say about it.

11x09 It Takes You Away
Oh wow, they cast an actually blind actress! The grannies! Is it weird that this is to me the probably most interesting thing of this season? My interpretation is that the Doctor didn't have 7 separate grandmas, but that they are incarnations. Heh, I like how in the mirror universe the image is mirrored. Poor Solitract is doomed to be forever alone.

11x10 The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
Moving planets aroud the universe again - I'm glad it was mentioned how that had happened before. I don't know, this season feels like a lot of the problems are solved by Deux Ex Machina. Also too much Sonic Screwdriver.

11x11 Resolution
What's with the ugly-ass big font?! The Lin actress looks sooo familiar, but nothing on her IMDb page does, I am confused. Of course that squiddy thing would have to turn out to be a Dalek, anything else would have been disappointing. I was so worried they'd kill off Aaron as redemption, but phew, he gets to redeem himself the proper way.

Yeah, Kerblam had a really odd ending. It was like they didn't want to make people feel bad for buying stuff from Amazon or something. I can absolutely imagine the same episode in RTD era, but with an ending that criticises consumerism.

In all, S11 felt to me both more diverse but also more conservative than the previous seasons. Like, compare Twelve punching the racist in "Thin Ice" to Thirteen just being quiet when the racist cop was asking about Ryan and Yaz.

I don't remember that cop scene. Was it in the Rosa Parks episode?

Yeah, there was a scene where a cop was asking her and Graham about Yaz and Ryan (who were hiding outside and talking about their experiences with racism) and she basically just stood by and let him talk trash about them. I sort of understand don't-change-history as a reason why she had to let Rosa get arrested, but she absolutely should have punched that cop.

I don't know about the punching. I mean, I'm all for defending people, but not in that way. I didn't like it when the Doctor punched the guy who insulted Bill. The popularity of that trope (at least in the Sherlock fandom it was pretty popular) is a mystery to me. It just feels kind of condescending towards the "defendant", like "With the help of my masculinity I shall defend the helpless woman's honor!"*, which might not even be the sort of defence the defendant wants. I mean, Bill was right there - if anyone should have punched the guy, it was her! I'd rather have the defender explain to the racist why they are wrong.

* It was the same bullshit idea that made Liam Neeson look for a black guy to murder.

I have to admit I stopped watching after Kerblam. Very little of the season that I did watch was interesting or entertaining. Chibnall assembled a great cast then did fuck all with the characters, including the Doctor, which for me is pretty much unforgivable. Jodie deserves better.

Absolutely! I wish they could keep the cast and replace Chibnall.

This! People say that Capaldi was a good Doctor cursed with bad writing, but even in his first, uneven season he still had more to do and a much better character arc than what Whittaker got.
